Ozempic has been popular on social media and the news for the last year or so, not of these of which because of celebrity weight-loss rumors. We’ve discussed semaglutide here before, which is the active ingredient in the brand name Ozempic (developed by Novo Nordisk). Wegovy and Rybelsus are two other brand names with the same active ingredient. For simplicity’s sake, let’s go with “semaglutide” as the umbrella term for all these medications today. This is not sponsored in anyway, though I do offer some of the options we’ll be discussing.
1. What Is Ozempic?
Ozempic is a brand-name medication that contains semaglutide and is used for weight management. It’s part of a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists and was approved by the FDA in 2017. Again, Ozemic is a brand name of semaglutide, just like Lipitor is to atorvastatin or Kleenex is to facial tissue.
2. How Does Semaglutide Contribute to Weight Loss?
Semaglutide aids weight loss by mimicking the action of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite. It reduces hunger and helps you feel full, making it easier to consume fewer calories.
3. Is Semaglutide an Appetite Suppressant?
Semaglutide isn’t a traditional appetite suppressant, but it does reduce hunger and cravings. It works by slowing the emptying of your stomach and affecting the brain’s hunger and fullness centers.
4. How Do I Take Semaglutide for Weight Loss?
Semaglutide is typically administered via a once-weekly injection. It’s available in a pre-filled pen, making it easy to use. There are also options using a self (self-draw) and tablets.
5. Are There Any Side Effects Related to Weight Loss with Semaglutide?
Some people may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal side effects when starting semaglutide. These side effects usually improve with time and can contribute to weight loss as they may lead to reduced food intake.
6. Can Semaglutide Help Me Lose a Significant Amount of Weight?
Many individuals using semaglutide experience significant weight loss, often ranging from a few pounds to more substantial amounts. The actual amount of weight loss varies from person to person and depends on several factors, including lifestyle and dietary changes.
7. Do I Need to Follow a Special Diet While Taking Semaglutide?
While you don’t need a specific diet, it’s important to maintain a balanced and healthy eating plan. Consult with your healthcare provider for personalized guidance on nutrition and portion control to maximize your weight loss.
8. Can I Expect to Keep the Weight Off After I Stop Taking Semaglutide?
The weight you lose while taking semaglutide can be maintained if you continue with healthy eating and exercise habits even after discontinuing the medication. It’s essential to view Ozempic as a tool to kickstart your weight loss journey and build long-lasting habits. If someone starts/stops any medication without making broader lifestyle changes, the weight will return.
9. What Role Does Exercise Play with Semaglutide for Weight Loss?
Regular physical activity is a crucial component of any weight loss plan, including one involving semaglutide. Exercise can enhance the effects of the medication and improve overall health. At the A-List Clinic, we work with clients to build long-term, sustainable exercise and meal plans, rather than just writing a prescription and sending people away.
10. Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Semaglutide for Weight Loss?
Semaglutide is generally recommended for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) above a certain threshold and those who have struggled with weight loss through other means. We generally caution people away from Ozempic if they’re only struggling with 5-10 pounds or have a specific medication history.
Basically, semaglutide is more than just a diabetes medication; it’s a valuable tool in our weight loss arsenal. By working in harmony with a balanced diet and regular exercise, these medications can assist people on their weight loss journey, but it’s only one tool.
